Backpacking is amazing way to expand your knowledge about the world. Spending a month or more in Europe can provide you with life changing experiences. Unfortunately, many backpackers miss out on at least part of their trip because they come down with a cold, flu, or other illness. Follow these few steps to stay healthy so that you can fully enjoy your journey from start to finish.
A major part of many people’s backpacking experience is drinking. Sharing a pint of beer in a pub is a great way to bond with your fellow travelers as well as to meet some of the locals. Drinking more than a moderate amount, however, can put a great deal of stress on your body’s immune system. If you overindulge, you are far more likely to come down with a cold. Plus, sightseeing is not much fun when you have a throbbing head from a hangover. You can avoid these problems by limiting your alcohol consumption. If that does not sound like a fun idea, try to at least drink some water before bed. If you drink at least sixteen ounces of water before you pass out after a night on the town, your hangover will be much less severe. Additionally, you will help keep your body hydrated and healthy.
Even if you do not drink a great deal, it is crucial to stay hydrated. Without proper hydration, you will run your body down. A great way to stay hydrated is to take a large bottle of water with you in your day pack for when you go sightseeing. At night, fill the bottle at your hostel and stick in the kitchen’s freezer if there is one available. In the morning, stick it in your day pack. When you need a drink later, you will have cold, delicious water. You will not have to keep buying bottles of water, and you will keep yourself hydrated.
In addition to drinking plenty of water, you need plenty of healthy food as well. If you try to live on budget fried food, your digestive system and your stomach will suffer. Additionally, fast food does not give you the nutrients you need to stay healthy. In the summer, you should take advantage of Edinburgh’s markets. These are great places to buy fresh fruits and vegetables while on a backpacker’s budget.
Throughout your travels, you will probably get plenty of exercise just from sightseeing. If you are staying in one place for a while and start to become sedentary, make sure that you get some exercise. If you are staying in Edinburgh, one great way to stay fit is to take a long walk around the campus of one of the city’s four universities.
Finally, remember to wash your hands frequently. You are visiting lots of exciting new places and coming into contact with lots of exciting new germs. Carry hand sanitizer or soap with you and use them whenever possible. Taking a few seconds to wash your hands thoroughly could save you from a week long cold. Get the most out of your backpacking trip by taking steps to stay healthy.
